Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
We planted our first grapes on leased land in 1998. We sold our first wine in 2001. Our early sales were all at the wholesale level. We began our retail sales when we opened our Winery-Tasting room on Rt7 in 2008.
What is your primary product or service?
Growing grapes, making quality wine and providing a stimulating and fun Vermont farm experience for visitors to our tasting room.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
It all started with my growing grapes in my back yard, while working as an engineer for IBM in Essex Junction. I decided to follow my passion, and retired from IBM and began our winery venture.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We manage our grapes with the care and dedication that a cult California winery might devote to their grapes. We devote the same care to the winemaking process. Being a pioneering winery in a new wine region we strive to learn how best to vinify our cold hardy grapes. Our efforts are paying off as we have won many best in show awards for both our red and white wines.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have one sales location at our Shelburne RT7 state-of-the-art winery-tasting room building. We have 17 acres of grapes split among three sites in Shelburne and Charlotte.
Provide detailed directions to your location
We are located on Rt 7 just south of the Shelburne Museum and just north of the VT Teddy Bear Factory.
What type of payments do you accept?
Cash and all credit cards
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
We are a partner ship owned by three families. One of us (Ken Albert) works full time at the winery. Many visitors to our site are first greeted by Rhiannon Johnson our Tasting Room Manager.
What are your hours of operation?
11AM-5PM, seven days a week. In the summer we stay open an hour later
